The Curious Case Of The Nigerian Watch Scammer Part 2: Watchlectric Scamaloo
Last week I posted about how my attempts to get rid of a fancy watch had led me into contact with an eBay user in Australia who wanted me to post the watch to Texas, to what Google showed as an empty lot, for the attention of a man with a different name. Also, both these guys were Nigerian and they wanted me to use PayPal instead of paying direct through eBay.
Because I’m sharp as a tack, I noticed something was slightly amiss about all of this, so took some time out of my day to dig into this, as well as posting a fake watch box with a springy “Fuck You!” sign for whoever opened it.
It turned out that whoever I was dealing with was working for a Nigerian scam company (!!!) that seemingly tried to con people out of things so that they could be shipped to Lagos dirt cheap and sold on. Mystery solved, I still had to wonder what I was going to do with my new email buddy. So far he’d sent me an email from PayPal that promised they would release the funds as soon as I provided proof of postage.
After “accidentally” sending him the wrong receipt, and the Welsh language copy at that, he got quite annoyed and began to tell me he didn’t trust me.
I decided that whilst I was still trying to play a sucker, even the biggest suckers only get pushed so far.
Also, I was really unwilling to let the idea that I was potentially worth a lot more money and jewellery fall by the wayside. “James”…
