[Int. A secret facility, deep underground. We have no way of knowing if it is day or night. An excitable, bearded scientist leads a general with a chest full of medals down a dark corridor to a heavy steel door. The scientist stops at a fingerprint scanner and presses his palm to it. The door slides open to reveal a viewing room with a bank of complicated computer monitors. There is a blast shield lowered over the large window that takes up most of one side of the room.]

DR. CORNELIUS: I’m so glad you could make it here, General. We’ve been very excited about our latest project.

GENERAL: I should hope so, too. You Weapon X boys have been costing a fortune. But it should all be worth it if what you say is true.

CORNELIUS: Oh, absolutely. What we’re looking at here may be the future of modern warfare.

[CORNELIUS touches a button and the blast shields draw back from the window to reveal the room beyond, which houses a large tank of water. WOLVERINE floats inside, his head encased in some sort of complex apparatus, tubes connected to his veins. He stirs occasionally, as if fighting some unseen battle in his dreams, or as though the reality of his confinement briefly penetrates the anaesthetic fog and he struggles reflexively for freedom.]
